Autel MaxiScan MS300 Simple tool to read/clear OBD codes.
This is a simple tool which reads the OBD codes from the vehicle. It can delete the codes as well as tell if the monitoring sensors are in active state. I used this to find the reason for the check engine light and then googled the possible causes. Helped me save money by avoiding unnecessary part changes. Unless you are interested in scanning all the run-time data of your vehicle which can be polled by the more expensive scanners, this will do the job of reading/deleting any CEL/MIL codes.

Paid for "new" unit but received a used unit. The packged had already been cut opened and I can tell that it had been used. I took it out of the package connected it to my car per the instructions and it worked as promised. It is very simple to use, nothing fancy. Works perfect as it says Love you can find whats wrong and erease the codes to reset. I was worried about the price being cheap and dont understand why so little money but it worked amazing and did everything its meant to ~AsulliAutel MaxiScan MS300 It is inexpensive, it works and it saves money.
This inexpensive little device works well. Just plug it in and start the vehicle and it is straightforward to figure out. There is no need to even read the accompanying manual. Then I plug the code or codes into google with my make and model and most of the time I can find all that I need to know about an issue.

First this scanner got to me in about two days...perfect. Then it worked like a charm. No batteries, easy instruction booklet. It gave me my P0455 error code then erased it just like I asked. No complaints here.

Affordable option that worked well for me on my 1999 Miata. Clears check engine light and lists problem codes fine. Enabled me to discover the issue without an expensive, over-priced mechanic. Even if I can't fix it, at least I have a general idea of what the problem is so I can't get ripped off by a mechanic who may be hungry for my dollars.

Just received reader an hour ago; saved me a $10 gas bill for a trip into town to Auto Zone or another parts store where they will run a test and print it out for free using a similar reader. So...reader has already half way paid for itself. Plus, if ever in a situation where you don't want to run the car anywhere because you don't know why your light went off, this $20 gizmo is not only a convenience,but could save you damaging your car by trying to limp it into the parts store or mechanic.
Pros:
-Unit very well backlighted as soon as you plug it in. This came in very handy as it was dark out and interior car lights would not be enough to read a typical LCD unlit display while standing outside your vehicle. Never would have thought about this feature unless I had needed it, so, make a note when shopping around that this unit and this company took the time to include this feature in one of their basic models, and I, now, personlaly recomend having a backlit unit.
-I knew I had two codes due to the last time I went to the parts store, but lost the list. The reader came up with the two codes without problems.
Cons:
- The wire is long enough to hold the unit and stand up outside the vehicle and read. With only about a 2.5 Foot cable, the reader can not be more than 3 feet from wherever your computer output is at. The unit is very well backlighted, but can not be read from an angle. It is not long enough to have it plugged in and read while using the Rear Passenger Door Window as a writing surface. Because this particular device relies on vehicle power instead of an internal battery, it must be plugged in while you are taking readings, and of course because of this, it is not equiped with a HOLD feature so you must be at your car to record codes. I wanted a cheap unit, and knew before I bought it that this would be the case, but, especially if I had a shorter car instead of my SUV, and if my computer plug in were further away, it would be a real pain. With the location of my computer plug on my vehicle, combined with an SUV height of the plug at around 3 feet from the ground, I was only slightly frustrated by the cable length of the reader, which required me to do a lot of back and forth manipulation for only 2 code reads.
-Were it not for the cabel length issue, I would rate this unit a solid 5. That being said, I bought this unit as my first OBDII reader, knowing that in the future this one would become a reliable backup. Since I am already whining, might as well state that this is a very simple reader with no frills or sophisticated options, so, as my car gets older and my hands get dirtier, I will be purchasing another reader with more options, but, for my aging vehicles first round of repairs, this should do just fine.

I have been having problems with my car and my brothers car as well. We always wanted a code reader but they were a little pricey. I was so excited when I found this one for $20! Despite a few bad reviews, I decided to take a chance. I am happy to say that for the price, it does everything I need it to do and I have experienced no problems with it at all. I am now fixing everything on my car that I can and I don't have to worry if a mechanic is trying to rip me off. I am extremely satisfied with this product and I couldn't be happier!

I wasn't expecting much because this unit didn't cost much. I'm pleasantly suprised the Autel does what it's supposed too. Great tool for resetting your warning lights and seeing what they mean.

Wow I can't believe I paid $60-80 in the past for something I can do! Crazy! Funny thing is the ex is a mechanic and it was like pulling teeth to get him to help out with turning off check engine light when we were together. Now I have my own tool and out with that tool. HA!

I had a check engine light on in my Ford Fusion so I bought this scanner to see what was wrong. I bought it based on the reviews as well as the price and I must say that I am delighted. The device plugged into my car and quickly came up with the codes. It was what I had suspected but how can you really know what's wrong in today's modern cars without spending a ton of money replacing components? Now I know. It may still need a mechanic visit but now I can forgo the back-and-forth and rest assured that the guy isn't ripping me off.
Great for the money!
Bought this for a friend of mine who needed it for his car. Saved him about $50 from not having to go get it diagnosed from a mechanic. Definitely recommend it for those CEL's.

After getting hosed at the Mechanic for 80 bucks, and having to go to the auto parts store each time my CEL went on, I found this product. It's simple, the instructions are easy to read, and it does exactly what i need it to. The manual has a great reference chart for each code, and I can just take the code and plug it into google and go from there.

For those of you that just want to grab the code and go this is the tool for you. With the advent of the internet you can google search your vehicle make, model and trouble code and you will basically be served with the results on a silver platter. I had no need for the CD included, which I've read doesn't help much at all. The manual is pretty clear as to how to hook up the reader and sorting through the codes. Love this lil gadget. It'll make me the go to person for anybody with a CEL light and I'll look pro...after I do a quick google search.

I was amazed and how cheap and functional this item was and to think I used to have the local shop run diagnostics for $50 a pop. This may not tell you everything, but it will give you the codes your cars computer is sending to turn on your check engine light. It will even allow you to clear the codes or store them. Finally, this item comes with both a manual for use and code interpretations in the manual, but also codes on CD. I feel my money was well spent and my 2 cars thank the maker.

I thought I was just going to use this so my TrailBlazer could pass smog, but I was shopping around for a new car thinking that I wouldn't get a good price for my trade in because the check engine light was on....HA HA! Nope, With a few quick presses of the buttons (less than 30 seconds)"BOOM BOOM-OUT GO THE LIGHTS!!" they didn't even know about it!! So I ended up getting top dollar value for my trade, usually the dealer sticks you for something here or there but for once I stuck them!!
Talk about Easy to use, This thing is CAKE!! I had NO IDEA I could pick up a scan tool for less than $20 that would turn off the pesky "Check Engine" light....MOO HAA HAA, the possibilities are endless! Im thinking about floating around smog stations with a sign that says "Will Turn Off Check Engine Light for $20" Just to get even for all the times I had to pay $300 - $1800 for repairs before I could get a vehicle smogged.... But really folks, if your thinking about getting this, DONT HESITATE, grab one and keep it in the glove, ya never know when you might need it, not to mention it reads the codes and you could easily find out whats wrong before taking it to the mechanic, especially if your out of town and at the mercy of "pirate wrenchers" making you walk the plank...... an ounce of prevention beats a $1800.00 bill at 22.4% APR....

Been wanting one of these for a while now.. I had to get one in order to repair my car for inspection... Let me tell you this thing is worth EVERY penny!!!!!! This saved me thousands of dollers by acually telling me what was wrong so that i could fix it.. I do not know why i have not had one of these since i started driving.. I think this unit should be installed in every car... This thing worked great on my 1998 Subaru Legacy wagon i also pluged it in to a lincon 2002 LS and cleard the codes on it worked perfect.. Also one note.. the erase DTC codes works great but if you have a problem that still exists it will trigger the CEL and throw a code as soon as your start the engine or shortly there after.. This thing is worth its weight in GOLD I highly recommend getting this if you are mechanically inclined to work on your own car, and save thousands.

This thing works great once you get it to communicate. The one guy said turn your car to "on" but I think you need to put it in "run" for it to work correctly. The backlight is nice and bright. It can also read the VIN and component's status. The codes are in the little booklet or you can go online easily enough. Well worth the low price if you like working on your car.

I have a Chrysler product that simply isn't dependable; the engine/transmission computer will periodically reset, usually in 55-MPH traffic, leaving you engine-dead for a minute or more at a time, keeping the "check engine" light lit, and Chrysler "repairs" have only aggravated the problem. The Maxiscan allows me to check the computer, reset the codes that keep the engine light on, and get the car back on the road without using my AAA membership. Once the car loan is paid down to the point that I can trade the car in, I'll dump this V-6 anchor and buy something (non-Chrysler) that I can depend on; until then, this is my only hope of getting me (eventually) where I need to go.

Bought the "Autel Maxiscan MS300" because of price, and was tired of the people at Autozone, Advanced Auto Parts, as well as Auto Dealerships, either having an attitude becuase i just wanted the codes so i could fix the issue with my car, and or charging me money to hook the tool up and give me some numbers which takes less than 2 minutes.
This is very easy to use, immediately worked as soon as i hooked it up to the OBD port. Found the trouble codes in no time and erased them. (I had the p0420 and p0430 codes, which i replaced the o2(oxygen sensors 2 days before deleting the codes.) SES light went out, that took less than a minute. Besides, I read the book B4 i hooked the "Scan Tool", up and used it as if i were using this thing all my life. Read the instructions and you cannot go wrong. Now if i wanted to, I could charge ppl to tell them their DTC's, but instead i will tell them where they can go....and thats amazon.com and order one; be a slave to no car. To think i was about to buy "Car MD" for over 200 bucks. You can hook this up as many times as u want to any car that has OBD2, made 1996 and after.

So I've since tried it on Volvos, Cadillacs, Mercedes, Pontiacs all varying years and models and was able to write down codes and reset the light in all of them within less than a minute.
In each case I skipped the manual and put the code in P0118 Cheverolet for instance in a search engine and read what the most frequent causes are for that model and in each case the information gleaned from online was right on point. A lot of cases it was just a low antifreeze and the button just hadnt been reset. Ridiculous that shops charge $60 and $90 to read your check engine light and check the code. Buy this!! You will be glad.

This is a great little tool to have around when that mysterious "Check Engine" light appears on your dashboard. Quickly told me my O2 sensor was slow to respond. This is on a 3 year old vehicle with just 15000 miles on the odometer. I cleared the code with the scan tool and the light hasn't reappeared. If it happens again in a reasonable amount of time, then I'll know it needs attention for sure. Otherwise, to me, it was just a fluke. I love this little scan tool.

I like this scanner, it works as advertized. It displayed my O2 sensor problem in my 2004 honda crv. I reset the check engine light with it, replaced the sensor, and so far so good. All I can say is that for now it works fine on my Honda crv.

In each case I skipped the manual and put the code in P0118 Cheverolet for instance in a search engine and read what the most frequent causes are for that model and in each case the information gleaned from online was right on point. A lot of cases it was just a low antifreeze and the button just hadnt been reset. Ridiculous that shops charge $60 and $90 to read your check engine light and check the code. Buy this!! You will be glad.
Autel MaxiScan MS300 A great tool for eliminating the dashboard mystery.
This is a great little tool to have around when that mysterious "Check Engine" light appears on your dashboard. Quickly told me my O2 sensor was slow to respond. This is on a 3 year old vehicle with just 15000 miles on the odometer. I cleared the code with the scan tool and the light hasn't reappeared. If it happens again in a reasonable amount of time, then I'll know it needs attention for sure. Otherwise, to me, it was just a fluke. I love this little scan tool.

I like this scanner, it works as advertized. It displayed my O2 sensor problem in my 2004 honda crv. I reset the check engine light with it, replaced the sensor, and so far so good. All I can say is that for now it works fine on my Honda crv.

With todays complex engines with mass air flow sensors, multiple oxygen sensors, ECUs etc etc., and for the low price of this Autel MaxiScan MS300 OBD-II reader, everyone should really keep one in their trunk in case of an emergency on some out of town trip - very nice to know if the Check Engine light is something really serious or something less benign where you can limp your vehicle back into town... Get one today!!!!

I ordered this unit after another unit by a different company would not reset the check engine light on my 2002 Subaru Forester. This one did, however so I'm happy. Despite the low price and basic nature of this unit, it worked very well.

This product does exactly what it says it will. I've rented expensive OBDII readers from parts chains and this pulls the code no differently than theirs. If you're only wanting the trouble codes this is the way to go. Once you have the code just look it up on the internet or use the supplied booklet to find out what it means. For the price this is a great tool to have on hand. Any mechanic that charges you to pull a code ought to be ashamed. It literally only takes a minute to get the trouble codes off your car.

Worked great! I was a little worried since I own a Honda Civic and seen a few people (who also owned Civics) having some problems. However, it worked like a charm for me. I followed the directions as stated in the manual and had no trouble. I also used it on my friends 2005 Ford Expedition, also with no trouble. I did notice that the other Civic owners that were having difficulty had newer models (2006) so perhaps that is something to look into.

Got this unit after 'service engine soon' light came on a 2000 BMW 323i I just recently acquired from a friend. Being new to the LA area and not knowing (or trusting) any mechanics yet, I decided to get this unit and give it a shot myself. I'm glad I did and I feel as if this little device has already paid for itself in the first go. I was able to read the codes right away and reset the computer. As other reviewers have noted, the CD is not of great use, neither are the code tables in the instruction manual. Regardless, the key is getting the codes! Even with a 'proprietary' engine code, you'll be able to get the fault description online - either in a fault site for your specific make/model or in the forums. I now have the likely culprit causing the light to go off and can tackle the work myself - it would have cost me $$$ at a dealership or a mechanic, but its something I can do relatively easily in my garage with a bit of time on my hands.
Note other reviewers comments on passing emissions testing after erasing computer codes and data in your car. You will most likely have to drive around x number of miles to make sure the computer cycles thru all settings before returning a 'pass' on a scanner.. this scanner will also not reset an 'airbag' light - that's a more involved issue.
Overall completely satisfied with the unit and I can't really see the other scanners at 3-5 times the cost of this one performing any better.

Codes give basic information, such as those I received: "P0328 knock sensor circuit high voltage input" and "P0442 Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (small leak)," the latter of which could be caused by many different issues. Googling the code along with your make and model will likely bring up a ton of information on how to actually fix the problem(s), so the codebook + CD are less useful than the web for those of us with less mechanical experience.
The cheapest I can get a mechanic to hook up a code reader for is $15, so using it on 2 cars It has already paid for itself. No batteries required, as it runs off the car's power, so it is always ready to go. Great purchse.

I was hesitant after reading the negative reviews for this item, but they were in the small minority, so I was willing to give the product the benefit of the "doubt the negative reviews". I'm glad I did.
For the pittance this item costs, you could not ask for more. Simple, easy to read display and operation. But don't expect it to be so easy you don't have to read the instructions. I found the them accurate and clear, not the typical transliteration you sometimes get.
Unlike what others have reported, the CD-ROM loaded a very simple but functioning program. I got a valid report when selecting the GENERIC setting, but not when selecting the TOYOTA setting. So make sure to try the generic as well as the car manufacturer setting. The software usually returns a diagnostic after entering the 5 alpha-numeric, BUT NOT ALWAYS. Just hit your ENTER key and it should appear.
My specific experience:
1) with car ignition OFF, I pluged in the MS300 and got a lighted display with the "greeting" CAN OBD2.
2) I turned ignition to ON, but did NOT NOT start the car. Then pressed the ENTER button and got the proper and full sequence of messages as promised by the manual page 10.
3) I waited for the Main Menu which gives you the quantity of error codes IF there are any, and I/M Readiness Status.
4) I selected DTC (scroll if needed), and was given the one DTC that had been stored, in my case "P0440".
5) I wanted to clear the error code and the dashboard "Check Engine" light, so I scrolled to ERASE, and pressed ENTER, then ENTER again (for YES).
6) My error code was gone. (the "Check Engine " light had already gone back out after several days of driving)
7) I looked up the P0440 DTC in the Manual and in the CD-ROM program under the GENERIC setting. Both reported that the DTC meant "EVAP Emission Control System Malfunction".
8) If my "Check Engine" light comes on and the MS300 reports the same error, THEN I'll take the car in for service.

Had a fault code trigger on my '96 Land Rover Discovery. Think it had to do with the IAC, but anyways, the truck still ran fine. However, the stinkin' CEL was on now. On my old Bronco, I was able to jump some wires to clear the CEL, but with the OBDII, looks like the only way to clear it was with a scanner.
So I bought this little gem, as the local Autozone doesn't check codes anymore, AAMCO wanted $40 to reset it and a local gas station, to which I was a customer just a few hours earlier, wanted $20 (what ever happened to familiar faces and creating a strong customer base...anyhoo). So not wanting to give my hard earned money to these thieves, I bought this gem and for the money, it can't be beat. I was able to read the code (have a pen and paper at the ready to jot it down in case you have multiple fault codes and to keep a history of the fault codes. After you clear them all and if the CEL comes back on, scan again and compare fault codes to see if they were the ones that you jotted down earlier. Now you're on your way to troubleshooting! Good job! Now go have a beer!) and reset the CEL (check engine light for you newbs). Totally worth it and now I actually have a tool in case it kicks the code again. In which case I'll actually start troubleshooting. Might've been a one time fluke.
Reading the reviews, looks like the earlier generation of the product reviewed unfavorably and as time progressed, the reviews looked promising. I say go for it and if it doesn't work, exchange it. If it really doesn't work for your vehicle, just return it.
My sister has a CEL on her Lexus so I'll see if it works well for her car. But at least for a '96 Land Rover Discovery, it works!
